Traceability isn’t just a box to check in high-stakes manufacturing environments. It has a critical capability. Traceability is a core part of many Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), but not all systems deliver the same level of traceability, and traceability is often used as a blanket term that implies more than what’s truly provided.

Why Traceability Needs Data Integrity 

You should be able to use your MES solution to answer key traceability questions like: 

  • Where did this part originate? 
  • Operations used? 
  • Machines and tools used? 
  • Which operator(s) assembled it? 
  • When (and where) were defects reported (and repaired)? 

However, if  your MES system is siloed, loosely integrated, or vulnerable to gaps in communication, the answers to these questions are at risk of being incomplete, inaccurate, or delayed. 

When a part fails in the field or when a customer demands evidence, you can’t afford to second-guess your data.  

This requires data integrity. 

 

Data Integrity: The Backbone of Trustworthy Traceability 

Data integrity means your MES is the “System of Record” for the manufacturing process.  This system captures complete, correct, timely, and unalterable data, from the moment it’s generated to the moment it’s queried. 

In a high-performing MES, that means: 

  • Real-time data captured at the point of origin. Data should be captured as events happen, not batched, not approximated, and certainly not manually entered later.   3. How is data integrity enforced? Are there safeguards against tampering or data loss? 
  4. Does it integrate seamlessly with existing control systems, tools, and enterprise applications? 

If the answers are vague, proceed with caution.
